This rooftop retreat, nestled just moments from Portobello Road in Central London, is a masterclass in maximizing the potential of a compact urban footprint. With less than 20m² available, it was transformed from a highly exposed site into a functional, private sanctuary that feels like a natural extension of the home’s interior.

The project required a sophisticated approach to material selection to ensure durability and year-round appeal. We retained the original metal framework, re-cladding the structure with elegant vertical composite battens.

A signature feature wall of Zellige tiles was integrated to softly catch the London light, reflecting a gentle glow down into the internal kitchen and living areas. To create a cohesive transition between indoors and out, Millboard composite decking in a warm, inviting tone that mirrors the interior flooring was used.

This is punctuated by a terracotta herringbone tile threshold, adding a touch of artisanal texture at the entrance. Every inch of this terrace has been engineered for efficiency. Bespoke built-in benches provide discreet seating, while a ‘hidden door’ within the composite cladding conceals the BBQ, irrigation systems, and utility pipes, maintaining a clean, architectural finish.

Privacy was paramount given the proximity of neighbouring properties. We achieved a secluded atmosphere using: Pleached trees and an overhead wire framework to create a natural screen. Corten steel planters housing a curated selection of lush evergreens. Climbing Jasmine, trained to eventually form a fragrant, living canopy overhead. For evening entertaining, the lighting scheme was designed to be both “cosy and classy.” We specified Corston bronze wall lights to complement the warm timber tones, paired with directional spike lights nestled within the planting to highlight texture and depth.
