A garden retreat for every season. Once a dark and underused space, this urban garden has been transformed into a flexible, modern sanctuary designed for relaxation, entertaining, and year-round family life. What was once a gloomy, overshadowed plot is now a multi-functional outdoor living area that works as seamlessly in winter as it does in summer.
Originally, the garden consisted of a small patch of grass, narrow borders, an old shed and overgrown tall trees that blocked sunlight. The brief was clear: create a space that flows naturally from the house, offers privacy, and accommodates work, play, dining, and socialising – all without feeling overcrowded.

The redesign began with clearing the space and opening up the canopy of existing trees to allow sunlight in. Traditional and natural materials were selected to complement the house while giving a grounded, timeless feel: York stone, oak edging and subtle boundary fencing form a neutral yet elegant framework for the planting and features.
The garden now comprises distinct yet cohesive zones, each designed with flexibility in mind. A small terrace adjacent to the kitchen offers a quiet, contemplative space with a water feature. Nearby, a welcoming seating area with comfortable furniture and a firepit provides a relaxed hub for gatherings. Opposite, the outdoor kitchen and dining zone creates a focal point for entertaining, complete with a ceramic Kamado barbecue grill with ample counter space and storage.

The bespoke garden room anchors the space, providing a versatile area for work, play, or socialising. Planting has been designed for year-round impact. Carefully positioned trees, large shrubs, and structured evergreen planting add height, privacy, and seasonal interest. Multi-stem and domed-pruned shrubs introduce sculptural forms, while flowering and evergreen climbers soften structures.
Ground-level herbaceous planting adds colour, texture, and seasonal variation. The decision to remove the lawn has created a low-maintenance yet lush and natural environment. Lighting plays a key role in extending the garden’s usability into the evening.
