Walton on Thames Garden Design
A modern, intimate garden designed for comfort, privacy and outdoor living.
This garden has been carefully transformed into a stylish and inviting outdoor room, where thoughtful planting, layered seating zones, and a rich material palette work together to create a tranquil and private retreat. Soft checkerboard paving, painted and cladded walls, a dark metal pergola and natural slatted trellis panels form a cohesive architectural framework.

The combination of woven and metal furniture adds visual contrast and grounds the planting, which centres on sculptural evergreens, elegant dome topiary, multi-stem trees and cloud-pruned forms, complemented by herbaceous white-flowering plants and varying textures of green. The minimal yet expressive planting scheme will take on new drama when illuminated at night, with lighting adding depth, softness and evening atmosphere.
Multiple seating areas have been designed to maximise the space and encourage different uses throughout the day. The main lounge area sits beneath the pergola, enveloped by stunning pots and lush shrubs, with a comfortable sofa, two armchairs, pouffes, coffee tables, and an outdoor rug establishing an intimate living-room feel.

Evergreen jasmine and wisteria climb the pergola, adding scent and softness, while a suspended light above the coffee tables enhances the evening ambiance. A long linear planter behind the sofa serves both as a green backdrop and a gentle divider from the outdoor kitchen. Here, the choice of pots, trees and topiary becomes almost sculptural with each piece carefully positioned for balance, volume and visual delight.
The outdoor kitchen includes a stylish bar area with seating for five, encouraging convivial cooking, conversation and relaxed dining. Lanterns, a mirror, and a large stone planter with a multi-stem tree bring atmosphere and depth to this central social zone. On the left-hand side of the garden, a discreet round table sits amongst planted containers, offering another retreat for morning coffee or quiet conversation.

Originally flat and exposed, the garden lacked privacy and intimacy. The redesign introduces espalier trees along the back wall for instant screening and height, while the pergola establishes spatial dimension and enclosure. Climbing plants soften the upper structure and merge architecture with vegetation. The planting palette reiterates texture and form: evergreen domes and hedging for backbone and structure, multi-stem trees and cloud-pruned specimens for vertical emphasis, and herbaceous greens and white blooms for softness and seasonal dynamism. Ground-level planting along edges and pathways breaks up hard lines, while clusters of stone pots that vary in scale and colour help define and frame seating pockets.

Wall finishes further enhance the atmosphere: the walls within the pergola are clad in warm-toned volcanic porcelain, while the remaining walls are painted in a neutral shade that recedes gracefully behind the planting. Trellis panels above extend height and privacy. The chic checkerboard paving provides contemporary character underfoot, and an electric awning along the house wall ensures year-round usability. The outdoor kitchen, with powder-coated finishing and marble top, completes a garden designed for entertaining, unwinding, and effortless outdoor living.
