Garden Design Highgate

The Garden Builders were commissioned to design and build this stunning garden in Highgate. The garden was already laid out over three levels so the challenge was to modernise each level while creating a cohesive flow throughout the garden.

The lower terrace was paved using Sawn grey sandstone slabs. A Vande Moortel brick paving path brings a contrast of colour against the grey while enveloping an enticing seating area leading straight from the main house. Greenery was added to the terrace with terracotta pots housing fern trees and lollypop trees.

Leading up to the central lawn area large grey steps were built creating a flow from the lower terrace to the middle level of this large Highgate family garden design. A wide, diagonal brick path runs along the side of the large lawn to a further set of replica grey steps to the higher terrace bringing symmetry to the garden. To the right of the path a bamboo hedge hides a secret play area with artificial grass. By using artificial grass it enables its use throughout the year whatever the weather. To the left of the vast lawn, brick pavers create another seating area in which to enjoy the beautiful garden from a horizontal view. The final section to the garden design is host to a swimming pool and Summer house. The same Sawn grey sandstone was used to mirror the lower terrace and a similar coloured composite deck brings a contrast of material while providing a safe surface by the pool. To the rear of the pool area a low raised bed brings a vibrant green touch to the area. The rear wall was clad with contemporary tier panel stone cladding and painted to match the stone coping paving which enables the colour scheme to stand out. Trachelospermum jasminodes climbers add further height to the planting. Fibre-glassed pots in a rusty finish with agaves and box balls provide a bold colour while hosting darker plants. The consistent colour scheme with flashes of varied colour provides a warm and relaxing feel for a private space to dine, entertain and swim.

Box and yew hedging help to segment the variety of areas to this diverse garden. New planting was carefully considered to enhance and compliment the existing trees such as the Catalpa and Evergreen Magnolia. Hydrangeas offer a variety of tones throughout the garden while the Hakonechloa macra grass adds variety of low level, ground cover all year round.

Lighting is a key aspect to garden design. For this stylish and diverse garden spike spots, step lights and lanterns were used throughout all sections to illuminate the garden which enables use at all times of day while creating interesting vistas from all aspects.
