Large Central London Commercial Roof Terrace Design

Large, commercial terrace in Central London, with commanding views of the river Thames and the Southbank, offers an inviting rooftop retreat, featuring abundant planting, generous seating and ample, airy space for relaxation and entertainment.

Designed and constructed by The Garden Builders, the terrace serves as an outdoor office space for lunchbreaks and meetings and as outdoor function room for various commercial activities. Spacious gardens provide pleasurable hours of recreation and leisure and present garden designers with opportunities to create contrasting areas and proportions. A large garden can be a collection of smaller compositions unified by a central theme, unfolding seductively to provide an enticing journey throughout the entire space. The large, rambling rooftop environment of this commercial terrace is perfect for creating a series of distinct, functional spaces while taking advantage of the breathtaking scenery.

The terrace is divided into three areas. Two seating sections offer plenty of refreshing open space for congenial gatherings and admiring unparalleled views of the river, and iconic structures such as St. Paul's Cathedral and the Shard skyscraper. A central lawn with artificial grass provides connecting access and contrasting green space to the hardwood decking. The first seating area features an elegant, painted timber pergola matching the deep grey powder-coating of the adjacent planters and benches. The space is laid with composite timber decking and is furnished with timber tables and chairs, perfect for lunchtime and group meetings. The second seating area provides a breezy, uncluttered space for relaxation, with timber benches and tables, composite timber decking contrasted with blue-grey granite paving and built-in benches. The space also features a bespoke outdoor kitchen unit, with powder-coated aluminum base and granite countertop.

The lawn area, laid out with artificial grass of varying length, spotlights the bespoke built-in benches with painted timber tops, internal metal framework and powder-coated aluminum cladding. The space is also lined strategically with powder-coated planters featuring mixed planting. The organised seating areas are beautifully contrasted with a random planting scheme highlighted by meadow planting design. Meadow planting creates a picturesque wildflower element to the rooftop scheme, emphasising the open space feel of the terrace. Sedum planting likewise creates a naturalistic, low-maintenance surface contrast to the timber decking and granite paving.

Other planting elements include various fruit trees and elegant, large specimen olive trees planted in lovely large decorative urns painted white, located strategically across the rooftop space. For entertainment and information, large, outdoor TV screens are fitted to the metal posts. A unique, ecologically-minded feature of the terrace is the Farmbot automated farming system, a state-of-the-art home gardening robot kit, located in the lawn area, to grow crops on the terrace. At night, the terrace is dramatically transformed by an elaborate lighting system featuring a combination of ambient and task lighting.
