Pure Foundation Garden landscape design by Fernando Gonzales & constructed by The Garden Builders

garden landscape design

A beautiful and extraordinary garden space inspired by the richness and variety of the Chinese landscape and the harmonious character of the traditional Chinese garden, created for the Pure Land Foundation, a centre for art, music and theatre and well-being, by landscape designer Fernando Gonzales and The Garden Builders at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden is a rhythmic blend of colour, texture and space.

Curvilinear and irregularly-shaped boundaries, fabricated and clad from white, marble-like jesmonite TM, sensually surround the space, reflecting the flowing rhythm of traditional Chinese gardens, evoking serenity and positive energy, and offering a new, visual way of experiencing space. The jesmonite was manufactured utilising state of the art robotic CNC systems.

Seating, planting inspired by the primary colours in Buddhist art and ritual, and a small pool, complete the organic, naturalistic atmosphere, creating a soothing garden for contemplation and meditation. In Buddhism, Pure Land describes a realm of peace, harmony and higher consciousness.

A bench and small table are incorporated into the scheme as well as containers for plants. Tussocky grasses reflect the warm yellows and oranges, reds and blues of the Buddhist palette. The planting was selected for their texture and movement and used in a painterly way , creating shadow effects on the striking white backdrop of the curvaceous garden walls.

The planting includes golden rain tree, chamomile, various creeping varieties of thyme, Red Sea Thrift, Mexican fleabane, geraniums,, New Zealand scab plant, Knawel cushion, 'Lemon Ball', spoon-leaved stonecrop, Oven's wattle, King's spear, Yellow Asphodel, quaking grass, , cypress surge, avens, irises, plume poppy and Arctic raspberry.
