Roof terrace with artificial lawn
Designed by Katharina Nikl Landscapes & constructed by The Garden BuildersRoof terrace artificial lawn
We undertook this sensitive build with minimal disruption to the businesses within the commercial courtyard that provides access to the residential properties. Careful liaison with these businesses was needed, during demolition and for deliveries. Pre-scheduled furniture hoist lifts were carefully sequenced when transferring large items. Small items were carried in and out through the fire-exit staircase and residential lifts. These also served as pedestrian access for our team. We strictly followed tidying-up procedures daily and coordinated closely with building management for smooth operations.
We replaced the existing surfaces with Ipe decking boards, which measured 90 mm to avoid cupping, and meticulously fitted with double-screwed, discreet stainless steel screws. We designed and built on site a floating bench and raised planters of varying heights on a steel framework adjusted on-site to fit the actual dimensions of the space. We re-designed the food preparation area with underside storage and incorporated the client's existing BBQ, all contained within an area of Ipe decking, backdropped by a rendered and painted wall.
A contrast surface was provided by the artificial lawn area which crucially also served as the putting green and lounging area. Structural evergreens accentuated the space, notably downsized Olive trees that will be allowed to grow into the space. The planting also featured evergreen shrubs and climbers with perennials offering a range of summer textures and colours. The planting scheme was completed by daffodils, snow drops and mixed tulip bulbs for late winter and spring interest. To supplement manual watering, a simple tap mounted irrigation system was installed.
The client approved our recommendation to install high-quality LED lighting to highlight surfaces and architectural elements in the evenings.
