The project required a complete overhaul of both the front and rear garden spaces, including full excavation and stripping to construct a new outdoor environment.

The rear garden designed space consisted of a main terrace built over the basement of the house, resting on a concrete pad for structural support. The design involved a multi-level scheme, which was carefully planned to ensure easy and open access through the house to the terrace and lawn area.

The scheme utilised Minster stone instead of natural Portland stone for practical purposes.. Minster stone effectively replicates the aesthetic qualities of Portland stone without the attendant problems of repair and maintenance of the natural stone.

Drainage was also carefully considered, with the installation of a unique slot-drain drainage system within the garden landscaping design. The system was built into the terrace and discreetly dislodges rainwater into the drain.

The laying of the lawn involved meticulous planning, involving constructing a sub-base of multiple layers of free-draining materials appropriate for a domestic, ornamental lawn. The lawn was then bordered by thin -zone pieces of varying sizes. Boundary planting consisted of Yew hedging and pre-planted panels of instant live ivy.

Giving additional height to the scheme and the planting borders are formal, shade-tolerant plants and blocks of birch trees. A bespoke glass house, commissioned by the client, was placed by the kitchen garden area where the vegetable planting beds are located. The borders were created with matching stone.

The planting likewise featured mild steel planters ,rusty, corten steel-like finish, beautifully mimicking the colours of the growing willow in the garden design. The garden was bordered by existing mature trees.

LED light fittings were set within the steps area of the terrace to highlight the treads and coping stone details at night. Complementing the terrace is bespoke slatted screening in a matching RAL colour.

The left-hand side of the garden featured raised beds clad with large pieces of Minster stone. To create better drainage, a porous cedar gravel path was built around the vegetable garden area. A similar system was implemented for the side paths which led to the front garden.

The front garden has an inner driveway, made of fully porous resin-bound surface edged with basalt setts. This was surrounded by large feature planting areas with box hedging, grasses and perennials for seasonal, year-round interest. The plants were selected to suit the Hampstead Garden Suburb environment.

The fully dimmable lighting scheme for the front garden featured Hunza lighting, which was set within the garden and placed along the driveway's perimeter and amongst the feature plants. The system is controlled within the property's main audio visual system.
